College Credit for Work Experience

Can college credit for work experience work for me?

It sure can.

Colleges and universities that offer credit for experience–also called experiential credit–are committed to helping you get your degree.  These schools, like regular colleges and universities, make a business out of education–the big difference here is that they aren’t trying to make money by getting you to hold down a desk in a classroom.

You’ve been conditioned to believe that the only way to learn is to be lectured at, but think about it! You’re always learning new skills, and that’s true at work as it is in other aspects of life.

Schools that offer college credit for work experience not only recognize this fact, they recognize it in the form of credits toward your degree.  And isn’t that really the point of your college education? To get your degree?

So how do I get college credit for work experience?

First, you’ve got to find the right college or university for you.  Find one that fits your budget, and whose reputation will make your degree stand up to what you want to do with it.   Check into their requirements–not all schools award college credit for work experience the same way.  Some take longer, or require more extensive documentation than others, or require that your college credit for work experience coincide with certain classes.

It’s a good idea to sit down and brainstorm some about what you think will qualify for college credit for work experience.  List all the skills you’ve accumulated at your job.  If you write reports, that could fulfill as English Composition credits.  If you’ve taken training courses, some schools will list those by their titles as classes for credit.  Think outside the box.

Most schools should let you have a free consultation to determine how many credits you’re eligible for.
